A Message from Principal Karr

Field Families—

I have genuinely enjoyed my first few weeks as Field’s principal. It is clear that the relationships between students, staff members, and families within Field Elementary are special, and I am so excited to be a part of this community.

As the new principal, feedback from all stakeholders is important. During the month of April, I will be inviting Field parents and guardians to participate in focus groups targeting the following topics: core values, school culture, student engagement, schoolwide systems, safety, and communication. The focus groups are intended to allow our parents and guardians an opportunity to share their observations and feedback with the leadership team. Additionally, these conversations will assist the development of Field’s long-term goals. If you are interested in participating, please email me at Trevor.Karr@houstonisd.org.

Also, Field’s ‘Fun Run’ is approaching fast! This week, we officially kicked off our Fun Run fundraiser through MyBooster.com. As a school, we are raising funds to purchase an updated and safe playground for our students to enjoy for years to come. Additionally, the funds raised will assist the campus with other improvements related to campus security, campus safety, and the overall classroom experience at Field Elementary. In addition to your involvement with the Fun Run, I am encouraging families to attend our upcoming PTO meeting on Wednesday, March 8th at 5:30 PM under the pavilion. Your involvement and feedback in these meetings will help the campus make informed decisions about these campus improvement efforts. We hope to see you there!

Thank you for taking the time to read the PTO newsletter and my message to the community. Let’s work together to ensure we head into Spring Break on a strong and positive note so we all can enjoy a well-deserved break!

Sincerely,

Principal Karr

"Wow! It’s so very humbling and truly an honor. The staff here at Field are one of a kind and I’m very grateful for the award".

With those words, Mrs. Franklin, our wonderful music teacher, graciously responded to being named the 2023 Field Elementary Teacher of the Year! In her first year at Field, Mrs. Franklin has made her impact felt on the students. Her dedication to providing a positive and inclusive classroom environment and her innovative teaching strategies have made her a beloved and respected member of our community.

Mrs. Franklin's passion for music and teaching is evident in all she does. She has been teaching for six years, and her teaching approach has always centered on keeping students engaged and motivated. Mrs. Franklin tailors her teaching to meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles and backgrounds by incorporating various holidays and celebrations into her music instruction. Of our students, she says, "Our students are incredible! I came in new to Field this year, and they have been like sponges, soaking up all I can teach them! I incorporate a lot of hands-on learning and movement to help students stay engaged and have positive rewards to motivate that great behavior!" She believes that music has the ability to cross language barriers and open our minds to the amazing cultures of our world.

Mrs. Franklin strongly advocates fostering a positive and inclusive classroom culture. She models respect and inclusivity to her students, creating a safe and positive space for them to express their creativity through music. She encourages her students to celebrate each other's successes, and no growth is considered too small in her classroom. Her greatest accomplishment as a teacher is when a student expresses courage in trying something new and sees their own success.

Her advice to new teachers just starting out in the profession is rooted in the advice she took from her grandmother after her oldest child was born: "If you don't take care of yourself, you can't take care of anyone else." "There will always be children to teach, but there is only one you." Mrs. Franklin balances the demands of teaching with her personal life and self-care by having amazing support from her spouse and best friend, Mr. Franklin. But also recognizes that coffee, too, has been a faithful and reliable friend!

We are so proud to have Mrs. Franklin at Field, and we look forward to seeing the impact she will continue to make on our students and staff. We congratulate Mrs. Franklin on winning Teacher of the Year 2023 and wish her all the best as she celebrates her win with a restaurant tour over spring break! Job well done!

Field Teacher of the Year - Mrs. Franklin

Field of Dreamers Garden Club

This year, we kicked off our Field of Dreamers Garden Club for our second season!

This amazing program, is run by parent volunteers who donate 20 minutes of their time every Thursday.

In this small amount of time students connect with the Earth, plant a thing or two, learn where their food comes from, sample fresh herbs or lettuce depending on what's growing, get a little dirty and explore the wonders of nature. So much goes on in those 7 beds at the front - you would be amazed!🐛 We also want to bring the students to the Butterfly Garden that was built and funded by grants and parent volunteers last year. The Butterfly Garden is located outside the PE room.

If you have 20 minutes to donate please let us know. You may reach Ebony Porter at campfirequilts@gmail.com . More information can be found here
